Do the participants need to have lawyers present at the mediation?
You do not need to have a lawyer present during mediation. Mediation works very well without lawyers, and you can always request a break if you want to consult with your lawyer before reaching an agreement. However, parties often benefit from the guidance and support that their lawyer or accountant can provide during mediation, and it works very well. During the preliminary meeting, it is agreed whether the parties will have a lawyer/accountant present during mediation.
